A few weeks ago we took Avery to her first movie – the Lego Movie. Though she wasn’t as calm during it as one could have hoped I think she still had a good time. She bounced from lap to lap (and to her own seat) most of the time keeping pretty quiet about it. At one point she wanted the lights on but she understood the explanation as to why they couldn’t be on. She paid attention for most of it and often referred to the movie as the Kraggle.
She was talking about other parts of it for days afterward and to this day (I know three weeks isn’t a long time) you’ll still randomly catch her singing “Everything Is Awesome”. Kids at this age love everything in repetition. She likes to watch the same set of movie over and over as well as the same T.V. episodes. She finds comfort in knowing what comes next or when it is going to be over.
As I’m writing this I’m aware I’m making my kid sound like a media junkie but I assure you television is such a small fraction of her day.
She has her own titles for a couple of movies. 101 Dalmatians is “Cruella and the Puppies” while Frozen is often know by various different character’s names from the movie (Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Christoph, etc.)
Watching her enjoy things brings its own sense of joy. Watching her face light up when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song comes on is its own kind of parental validation.
