Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore [Book Review] (33)

Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore is a wonderfully whimsical story about the mystical and titular Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore. The best comparison, and it isn’t a good one, is that this book is like a wonderfully written Dan Brown novel. There is so much passion and joy on these pages that you actually feel it seeping into as you read.

Clay is the main character who after losing his job designing the website of a business put out of business by the recession stumbles upon a job as the night clerk of Mr. Penumbra’s. Soon after he begins to unlock the mysteries of this little bookstore. Every step of the way is a breath of fresh air making you love the craft of this novel and will have you wondering if all the things mentioned during the course of the book are real.

I couldn’t possibly recommend this book any higher. It isn’t my standard love of the coming of age novel but instead finding wonder and whimsy in the darkest of corners or the highest of shelves.
